The Kooikerhondje is described as the “little white and orange dog with a big heart”—is a sporty, brilliant breed with a silky all-weather coat of white with red patches. They are instantly recognizable thanks to their large, black-tipped ears and the richly feathered tail they wag proudly. They were bred to work along side their owner luring ducks into traps using their well feathered tails. They also killed vermin and have a strong prey drive. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a harmoniously built sporting dog of almost square body proportions. He moves with his head held high; in action, the well-feathered waving tail is carried level with, or above the topline. Occasional trimming of the feet hair, nails and a good brushing is all that it takes to keep a Kooikerhondje groomed.
Kooikershondjes "Kooikers" are intelligent and eager to join in any offered activity. They are usually self-confident, good natured & alert companions. Most are active and enjoy retrieving, playing, competing in dog sports and swimming, yet Kooikers also are happy to lie on the couch and relax with their family.
A properly raised Kooiker that is socialized from early on, well exercised physically and mentally will mature into a quiet, well behaved family member. Kooikers prefer calm and quiet companions rather than noise and hyperactivity around them. They can be reserved with strangers and sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements. It is very important to properly socialize a young Kooiker and expose to many varied environments, humans, children and other animals.
Kooikerhondjes are very smart and highly trainable in many different dog activities. Their sensitivity and desire to please make them much more vulnerable to harsh corrections. They thrive with positive reinforcement type training and make a great team mate.
